The Long Shift
The Long Shift is a 23-minute adult animated sitcom that blends absurdist comedy with an overarching rebirth narrative inspired by Kafkaesque themes. The series follows Cesar Rivera, a recently deceased man who finds himself unexpectedly employed as a clerk at X-Mart, a convenience store located in purgatory—the final crossroads before the afterlife. What initially appears to be a mundane, dead-end job slowly reveals itself as a metaphysical holding space for lost souls burdened by unfinished business.

Description
The Long Shift is a 23-minute adult animated sitcom that blends absurdist comedy with an overarching rebirth narrative inspired by Kafkaesque themes. The series follows Cesar Rivera, a recently deceased man who finds himself unexpectedly employed as a clerk at X-Mart, a convenience store located in purgatory—the final crossroads before the afterlife. What initially appears to be a mundane, dead-end job slowly reveals itself as a metaphysical holding space for lost souls burdened by unfinished business.
Cesar works alongside a ragtag group of coworkers, all former customers turned clerks, each originating from vastly different backgrounds, eras, and moral frameworks. Trapped by their unresolved pasts, these ghosts embody the contradictions, regrets, and anxieties of their former lives. Through daily interactions, surreal encounters, and darkly comedic scenarios, each coworker pushes Cesar to confront who he was in the living world and to reflect on his values, identity, and unresolved guilt.
Set almost entirely within X-Mart, purgatory is reimagined as a liminal retail space where the promised “white light” is merely a flickering streetlamp outside, and escape is rumored to come only by bus. The Long Shift uses satire, existential humor, and episodic storytelling to explore mortality, meaning, and personal transformation through the lens of eternal customer service.
All clerks and customers make out a diverse cast of characters from different backgrounds with different endings. But the story follows our main character, Cesar Rivera, who missed his bus to the afterlife
